What you're waiting fjord
Sorry sorry, but it took me ages to come up with a fjord pun. And it is late (past 11 here in Norway y'know). But I'll try my best for my next post, I promise.
Anyway, that was a roundabout way of letting you, the Carlbob.com viewer, that I am in Norway, "on business" as they say (which means I don't get to see much really, but at least get to stay in a nice hotel... hmm, not that I do that in my personal life anyway... [See blog posts passim - Ed])
Flew this morning from LHR T3 to Oslo's very nice, opened in 1998, Gardermoen Airport. Those of you who may ever have flown to Norway by Ryanair will not be familar with this airport, but will be with the lengthy motorway and two-hour journey from "Oslo"-Torp.. suckers).
I'll try and get some pics onto Flickr after my return visit to Oslo tomorrow.
Flight was with SAS Braathens, in Business Class. Not too crowded, and served a very delicious meal - noodle salad with hot salmon, with a gorgeous Black Forest Gateau-esque desert.
Plane was a Boeing 737-600, which had been kitted on with the usual, and bizarre, SAS equipment that makes Row 1 look very odd and features the most disturbing air-con system ever, which is turned on with a dramatic wheeeeeeeeeee shortly before take off. It is quite frankly the most frightening plane noise ever. I had assumed it was unique to the MD-80s SAS insist on flying but, no, they seem to enjoy putting bizarre equipment into all their planes...
Staying at the Radisson SAS (of course), but outside the Oslo city limits at the Park Hotel. I hadn't realised I'd been booked into this one until yesterday evening, and was initially worried (visions of Holiday Inn Brent Cross-style travelling salesman Alan Partridge hell punctuated my sleep), but decided to stick with it. Thank god I did - not only is it in a beautiful location (see main pic), but it's right next to where I need to be for my meeting tomorrow. And, what's more, the whole thing is the sight of Oslo's former main airport - although there's Nothing More To See, it still adds to the experience...
It really is lovely, anyway - it's on the banks of the Oslo Fjord and there's a beach right behind the hotel. As the pic shows, it's not beach weather per se - but it is peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. The plan is to have an 8am constitutional tomorrow morn.... we'll see...
Oh yeah and I had a meeting. And have one tomorrow morning. But that's not for here...
Flying to Bergen tomorrow evening, so shall aim to report back on that flight shortly after.
Off to bed shortly, dreaming of Anna Fjord [worse] or something.. actually, most likely the excitement of a Scandi breakfast!
